So Very Far From Fine

Romans 7:21-25
I have discovered
this principle of life —
that when I want to do
what is right,
I inevitably do what is wrong.
I love God’s law
with all my heart.
But there is another power
within me
that is at war with my mind.
This power makes me a slave
to the sin
that is still within me.
Oh, what a miserable person I am!
Who will free me
from this life that is dominated
by sin and death?
Thank God!
The answer is in Jesus Christ
our Lord.

Fall Away
Track 2 on twenty one pilots
And I’ll try to delay
what you make of my life

But I don’t want your way,
I want mine

I’m dyin’ and I’m tryin’,
but believe me, I’m fine

But I’m lyin’,
I’m so very far from fine

EXCERPT FROM SERMON
All U.S. Currency features the motto,
“In God We Trust.”
Why was that motto chosen
to represent the United States?
Who put it there?  And when?

In 1861, six months after the start
of the Civil War, James Pollock,
Director of the United States Mint,
was given this charge:
“The trust of our people in God
should be declared
on our national coins.
You will prepare a motto
expressing in the fewest terms
possible this national recognition.”
After studying the subject extensively,
Pollock presented the following:
“The motto suggested,
‘In God We Trust,’
is taken from our national hymn,
The Star-Spangled Banner.
This sentiment is familiar
to all of our citizens;
it has already thrilled the hearts
and fallen from the lips
of millions of Americans in song.
The time for the introduction
of this motto is favorable
and appropriate.
For we are in an hour
of national peril and danger,
an hour when man’s strength
is actually weakness.
It is time for us
to reverently acknowledge
God’s sovereignty,
so let our coinage declare
our trust in Him alone.”
I love that line.
“…an hour when man’s strength
is weakness…”
The strength of the United States
was making money.
And that money was being made
on the backs of slaves.
Our greatest “strength”
(profiting off of forced labor
and human misery)
was really our greatest weakness.
And once we admitted that,
we were able to acknowledge
that we desperately needed
God’s help to begin
setting things right.
We tried trusting in ourselves.
We failed.  From now now,
in God we trust.
