Proverbs 26:20-26
When gossip ends, quarrels end.
Fire goes out without wood.
Like dry wood on a raging fire,
so a hot-tempered person kindles strife.
Whispered gossip is delicious;
it is devoured with pleasure
but it penetrates deep within you.
Smooth talk from an evil heart
is like glaze on cracked pottery.
Kind words can be a cover
to conceal hatred of others,
for hypocrisy loves
to hide behind flattery.
Don’t be drawn in by the hypocrite,
for gracious speech can be a charade.
Don’t worry—
they can’t keep the mask on forever.
One day their hypocrisy
will be exposed before the world.

God, we pray for the discipline to hold our tongues more often than not when we have an urge to argue with those we love. Instead, we seek to capture a thought, make it obedient to you, and then let our lips speak from a heart overflowing with love and a mind set on encouragement. Amen
